United States Army
The US Army is the land-based service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It ranks in the top spot on the Global Firepower Index (GFI), which ranks the armies of the world in terms of combat capabilities.
The United States armed forces are comprised of eight uniformed services, one of which is the United States Army. It is designated as the Army of the United States in the US Constitution. The US President is the supreme commander-in-chief of the US army.
In terms of precedence, it is the oldest and most senior branch of the United States armed forces. The contemporary United States Army has its origins in the Continental Army, which was organized on June 14, 1775, to fight the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) prior to the establishment of the United States as a republic.
On June 3, 1784, the Congress of the Confederation established the United States Army to replace the defunct Continental Army. The United States Army considers itself a continuation of the Continental Army, and hence considers its institutional genesis in 1775 to represent the beginning of that armed force.
The United States Army is administered by the Department of Army (DOA), one of the Department of Defense’s three military departments.
The United States Army is led by a civilian senior-appointed federal servant. the Army Secretary (SECARMY), and by a chief military commander, the Army Chief of Staff (CSA), who is also a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
It is the largest military branch, with a planned end strength of 480,893 troops in fiscal year 2020; 336,129 soldiers in the Army National Guard (ARNG); and 188,703 soldiers in the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR). The US Army had a total component strength of 1,005,725 personnel.
The principal goal of the United States Army as a branch of the United States armed forces is “to fight and win our nation’s conflicts by delivering timely, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and the spectrum of conflict, in support of combatant commanders.”
The US Army participates in conflicts across the world in accordance with US government directives. It is the United States armed services’ greatest ground-based offensive and defensive force.
